Android Community Responds with The OpenAndroid Project

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

The OpenAndroid Project Google’s upset the Android community so the community has responded with an idea to replace what Google has created and what the community thought was Open Source.  The idea is called the OpenAndroid Project (aka Open Android Alliance). The whole concept of Google’s Android and it’s Open Source approach to mobile devices has taken a huge turn and the Android Open Source Project is twisted web of open and closed components.Google states:Android is the first free, open source, and fully customizable mobile platform. Android offers a full stack: an operating system, middleware, and key mobile applications. It also ...

The Android Open Source Mystery!

Friday, September 25th, 2009

So what is considered open source and what is not?Where do the boundaries of open source begin and end?Cyanogens latest releases include AOSP branches from the google source and lots more.  Is the Android Market application the cause of Googles anger or is it something else?Maybe we need to look at the contents of any builds available in the Android community and work out what is covered under the open source licenses and what is not.  I can understand that there maybe some proprietary applications but why would something that just helps to promote the Android Operating System be stopped ...

Cyanogen / Google Update – Waiting for lawyers

Friday, September 25th, 2009

I just spoke briefly with Cyaongen and he said:I don’t really want to talk about it much right now.. I’m talking with their PR counsel and hopefully we can sort this out.The issues raised was that I specifically target google-experienced devices, and asked it if was considered redistribution since these devices are already licensed for the apps.Yeah, lawyers are taking their time, they said it’s being discussed internally and I should have an answer soon. Hope all goes well Cyanogen.  We are all with ya!
